2013 Subaru Legacy and Outback Introduced Before New York Auto Show
Subaru sent details of the 2013 Legacy and Outback models on the Thursday before the New York Auto Show. In addition to the EyeSight system we talked about earlier this month, the cars get a slight restyling, light retuning, and a handful of interior and increase efficiency.
We will work with the 2013 Subaru Legacy, which gets a new grille, headlights and bumper start. Base models will get a more efficient version of the Subaru 2.5-liter boxer engine with a broader torque curve. Electricity from the 2.5i is on all four wheels via either a six-speed manual transmission or the second-generation Subaru Lineartronic continuously variable transmission can be transmitted. Performance is comparable with last year’s edition, with the four-cylinder making 173 hp.
The six-cylinder Legacy 3.6R models are equipped with 256 horsepower and is backed with a five-speed automatic transmission. New for 2013, the 3.6R model will include a shift paddles blipping function during downshifts match engine speed.
Subaru offers three different all-wheel-drive systems. The manual-equipped 2.5 AWD models use a constant viscous-coupling limited-slip differential. The 2.5i models with the CVT use the Active Torque Split AWD company with an electronically managed transfer clutch to control power distribution. Legacy 3.6R models use a third type, a variable torque distribution, which sends more power to the rear wheels.
Subaru says that Legacy models equipped with four-cylinder engine and the CVT is capable of 32 mpg on the highway, with a range of nearly 600 miles.
Subaru Legacy improves the rigidity of the mounted-2013 by upgrading the front strut and rear sub-frame rails, which also helps reduce vibration transmission in a car. The diameter of the rear stabilizer and the spring-damper rates grow. Body roll is reduced by 40 percent.
Trim levels remain the same, with basic, premium and Limited models are available, the 3.6R gets only base and Limited versions.
The 2013 Subaru Outback gets almost the same treatment as the Legacy. The front end is redesigned, with new headlamps, grille and bumper. The Outback also gets the same choice of engines and transmissions, and the same choice of AWD systems.
Fuel consumption on the Outback is a little less than the Legacy, at 30 mpg on the highway, but the car is more efficient than this year’s model. The Outback has a large passenger compartment measuring 105.4 cubic meters, with a loading capacity of 71.3 cubic feet.
The Outback is not a complete off-road vehicle, but it has a heavy, raised four-wheel independent suspension and ground clearance of 8.7 inches to get. Chassis parts have been updated. Like the Legacy, has been the body roll on the Outback reduced by 40 percent.
A new electroluminescent instrument cluster integrated the 3.5-inch color display that shows the features if equipped EyeSight. Rear air conditioning outlets are standard on Limited models. The audio system is upgraded to include Bluetooth phone and audio capability and iPod control.
The Legacy Outback and a complete line of safety features.
We will get our first look at the cars on the New York Auto Show and then see how it in dealerships later this year. Pricing has not yet been announced.
